Bridge treatment is an alternative solution to replacing missing teeth. It uses the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth as anchors and a fake tooth is hanging in the space in between. Bridge is cemented to anchor teeth and is fixed in place. You can chew the food you want but the anchors have to tolerate more pressure. Unfortunately, for this solution, the anchor teeth have to be prepared down to allow for the bridge to feel "normal" in the mouth. Bone loss still occurs where the tooth is missing and teeth that are used to hold this bridge are still prone to cavity, gum disease and nerve infection. If you lose one the anchor teeth, you will need to replace the entire bridge. It is a better alternative treatment as compared to removable appliances. But these days, dental implants are being used to replace one or more missing teeth. Dental implants eliminate the need to prepare the natural teeth down. They will not decay and preserve the bone.
